What It Takes to Achieve Your Goals

I have always been fascinated by magic shows, not just because the various acts showcasing the seemingly impossible, but because I know that what made it possible was focus and repetition over an incredible period of time.  Magic is essentially the sum of thousands of hours of working toward the goal of consistently amazing an audience.  Raymond Joseph Teller, of the renowned magic duo Penn & Teller, once said

“Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect.”

If we seek magic in our life and finances, we can use that same concept.  Instead of wondering when something can be accomplished, recognize that incredible outcomes come from investment over what often seems an incredible amount of time.  The beauty, however, is that small sums invested in any area consistently will add up to an outcome that amazes.  This works with money and time you invest in almost every area: real estate, stock market, debt elimination, relationships, or a magic trick.

My goal for April was to host an in-person workshop on forgiving financial mistakes.  Thanks to social distancing as a response to the novel coronavirus, I set that workshop aside.  I had put what seems like a significant number of hours, days, weeks of planning into developing a space in which to host the workshop and creating materials.  From the standpoint of my immediate goal, that time was wasted.  From the standpoint of making magic, it was simply the part of putting in more time that I had initially expected.

I have the opportunity to build an online training and launch it in May. I can view this setback as a loss, or I can view it as an opportunity to continue in the process of making magic in a new area.  I only have a few hours a week to work on my online course, but I know that putting in small amounts of time consistently will yield an outcome that amazes.

Perhaps you are facing a financial setback right now.  Perhaps you feel something you worked for is lost.  Be encouraged.  When you are in the process of making magic with your finances, relationships, career, personal goals, you will likely need to spend more time that you would consider reasonable, but that doesn’t mean the magic won’t happen. You can make magic in any part of your life my choosing to do more than anyone – including you – might reasonably expect.
